OUTSTANDING YEAR FOR BULLDOG TRACK!

Under Head Coach Sherman Flake ’97 and Assistant Coach Lawsonja Robinson (mother of Deant’a Robinson ’08), the Bulldogs were the Division C-D Catholic League champions for the first time ever! Their success was not that surprising when you consider both coaches were track stars themselves—Flake, an all-Catholic track star at Loyola in the 400m and 200m, and Robinson, a track star at Mumford.

In addition to great coaching, the team’s work ethic paid off. Intense daily practices began the week after Easter, with the team using the facilities at Mumford and Oak Park High. On rainy days, practice was held indoors at Loyola, with the team doing the dreaded running of stairs. Despite some moaning and groaning, by the first meet, our guys were ready!

By the second meet (against Waterford Lakes), the coaches were convinced that the Bulldogs had the talent and dedication to dominate their division. How right they were! Members of the team set 9 school records! At the May 17th MHSSA Regionals, Loyola took 2nd place, followed 3 days later by a 1st place finish at the Catholic League Championship at Riverview Gabriel Richard. A whopping 11 members of the team qualified for States: Najee A’ve ’11, Allen Gaines ’08 (All Catholic), Sturleng Hall ’08, DeAngelo Harris ’09 (All Catholic, All State), Thomas Hervey ’09 (All Catholic), Trayon Nash ’09 (All Catholic, All State), Deont’a Robinson ’08 (All Catholic, All State), David Shockley ’08 (All Catholic, All State), Terrell Swartz ’08 (All Catholic), and Kumar Tuft ’09 (All Catholic, All State), DeAndre Ulmer ’09 (All Catholic). Loyola finished 6th overall in the State competition.

Special congratulations to David Shockley, who came back a big winner—1st in the State in the Long Jump! Special congratulations also to Deont’a Robinson, who came in 5th in the State in the 400m, and to the 4x400 Relay Team, who also placed 5th in the State.

Kumar Tuft ’09 comes in 2nd in the mile at a league meet.

David Shockley ‘08 shows his winning form in the long jump.

All around congratulations to the entire 2007-2008 Bulldog Track team and coaches who gave us good reason to be proud!
