Loyola Basketball Produces Three Successful Teams

Varsity Basketball: Catholic League Champs

Loyola’s varsity basketball team won the Catholic League Championship during a successful 14-7 season, defeating Bishop Foley 62-56 in the championship game.

"We replaced five starters and eight seniors from last year’s team, " said Coach John Buscemi. "I’m proud of the work ethic and effort of our team as they continued to improve every game. But, more important, they matured and became better persons during the season."

For his outstanding leadership during the basketball season Mr. Buscemi was awarded the coveted Catholic League Coach of the Year (C-D Division) honor.

Other honors went to:
All-Catholic: Donte’ Franklin ‘10
All-League: Scott Jones ‘10 and Paul Dunn ‘11
All-Academic: Devonte Jones ‘12

Varsity Bulldogs were Matthew Gold, Scott Jones, Demonte Wales, Devin Dodson-Wynne, Montel Crooks, Devonte Jones, Steven Jackson, Donte’ Franklin, Jevon Harden, Paul Dunn, Jerrell Simmons, Justin King and Shawn Thomas.

Assisting Mr. Buscemi were Mr. Anthony Ragland (assistant varsity coach), Mr. Terry Tidwell (head junior varsity coach), Mr. Charles Edge (head freshman coach), Mr. Michael Black (assistant coach) and Mr. Dan Geoghegan (assistant coach).

Team managers were Tanez Harvey and Jaylen Taylor (varsity) and Joshua Gibson (junior varsity and freshmen).

Junior Varsity and Freshmen Basketball

The Junior Varsity had a good season with a 10-7 record. The team started off the season with six consecutive victories and then cooled off but still had a winning season.

Junior Varsity Bulldogs were Jaylin Gaddie, Ronald Bradford, Demetrius Siggers, Julian Turner, Walter Perry II, Willie Boykins and Stephon Hall.

The Freshmen team’s 14-6 record was the best in the short history of the freshmen program. Coach Edge was especially pleased with the two victories over Novi Catholic Central.

Freshmen Bulldogs were Ian Auberry, Keymonn'e Gabriel, Justin Goodwin, Joseph Patterson, Jamier Williams, Kharri Holloway, Marcus Mims, James Stewart, Jordan Jones, Michael Travis, Calvin Jackson, Joseph Armstrong, Darryl Montgomery, Toby Sharpe and Jeffrey Lane.
