The Bulldogs left no man standing in touchdown run for a non-league
16 -6 win against Warren Conner Creek.

It’s not over til it’s over…

The Bulldogs had one of their most successful seasons, tying the school record for victories in one season with seven and finishing with an impressive 7–3 record.

With last year’s graduation of a strong senior class and the return of only two full-time starters, the players entered the season knowing they had some big shoes to fill. The additional challenge of a tough regular-season Catholic League schedule forced the Bulldogs to grow up quickly.

The season started off on the right foot with non-league victories over Mt. Clemens and Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook. However, these exciting wins were followed by two disappointing defeats at the hands of Notre Dame Prep and Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard. It was eventually these two defeats that kept the Bulldogs from competing in the Catholic League playoffs.

Moreover, the losses certainly humbled the young team. Instead of taking defeat as a negative, the team used these losses as learning experiences. And learn they did…with victories in the next five games! One of the victories came against league rival Madison Heights Bishop Foley. The Bulldogs had never defeated Foley until the 41 – 13 onslaught they delivered in the last game of league play.

The winning streak put the Bulldogs back in the state playoffs for the first time in 3 seasons. The Bulldogs drew Allen Park Cabrini in the first round, with Cabrini ranked #7 in the state. Playing the role of underdog, the young Loyola team gave everything they had, but still fell just short of advancing with a 13–12 loss.

Head Coach John Guzzardo and his coaching staff have high hopes for next season, in part because they believe the young men saw what it takes to be a successful. So with desire, discipline, and dedication to themselves, their team, and their academics in the off season, the 2008-2009 Bulldogs should be able to challenge for the Catholic League championship and make a deeper run in the states.
