In Memoriam: Mary Catherine "Kitty" Storen
Born in Detroit, MI on Aug. 24, 1941
Departed on Feb. 20, 2009

Kitty Cooney Storen was born the first of nine children to Mary Catherine and William Cooney in Detroit, Michigan, on August 24, 1941. She attended Gesu grade school, and graduated from Immaculata High School in 1959. It was during her last year at Immaculata that she caught the eye of Bobby Storen, a college freshman at University of Detroit. After five years of dances, ball games, and summer days on the lake, they were married on June 20, 1964, and they spent forty-five years of marriage together.

Continuing the tradition of Catholic education in which she was raised, Kitty taught second grade at Gesu school, until the first of their six daughters was born. She spent the next eighteen years at home raising their girls, Tricia, Katie, Meghan, Elizabeth, Stephanie, and Julie. When their youngest daughter began first grade, Kitty began her four-year journey to a law degree at University of Detroit Law School. She graduated in 1987, and worked first at Fitzgerald, Peters and Dakmak, followed by several years at Plunkett and Cooney. After ten years of practice, she took the opportunity to become development director at University of Detroit Law School, and ultimately moved to Loyola High School in the same position. Kitty found that her years at Loyola were most fulfilling professionally and personally, allowing her to foster two of her lifelong dedications, Catholic education and the City of Detroit.

Throughout all these years, no passion was ever greater to Kitty than her family. In addition to wife and mother to Bob and the girls, she was mother-in-law to Mark, Tim, Rich, Jason, Randy, and Scott; grandmother to Hannah, Bobby, Zachary, Henry, Joe, Charlie, Mackenzie, Richie, Maggie, Mary Kate, Jack, and Alex; and sister to Bill, Pat, Margaret, Ann, Hank, Eileen, Julia, and Michael. Her weekends were filled with basketball, soccer, and Sunday evening family dinners, with good food, drink, and lively, sometimes rancorous, discussions. Every summer was spent at their cottage on Cloverdale Beach on the Canadian shore of Lake Erie, relaxing with Bob, her daughters, her sons-in-law, her twelve grandchildren, and her siblings. She spent her final months peacefully, surrounded by her family, in the comfort of her beautiful home.

The Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, February 24, 2009, 11:00am at St. Hugo of the Hills Church 2215 Opdyke Rd, Bloomfield Hills. The rite of Committal was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.
