Skillman Foundation awards Loyola $30,000

The Skillman Foundation’s "Good School: Making the Grade" initiative is a community effort to identify and replicate good schools, whether they are public, charter, religious or private. Drawing on the expertise of national and local advisors, the group has identified nine indicators of success, such as student academic performance, leadership and educational vitality, and student focus and supports.

The aim of this undertaking is to identify and recognize good schools and help them become even better. Skillman rightly understands that for Detroit to rebound meaningfully, its young people must have access to schools marked by safety and quality.

The Skillman team spent a total of two days at Loyola in early March. After spending time at the school, the team members offered high praise for what they saw, heard, and experienced. Several noted how moved they were while listening to students and parents tell their stories.

Skillman hosted a festive dinner at the Detroit Marriott on May 17 to mark the results of this year’s review of the city’s high schools that were indeed making a positive difference in the community. Loyola was one of a handful of schools to be named a Skillman "Emerging School" which comes with a $30,000 grant for instructional needs.
