A Message from Rev.
David Mastrangelo
The Loyola Bulldogs
Could Use Your Help

Dear
Friend of Loyola,

Since its inception fifteen years ago, Loyola High School has lived
up to its original mission: to provide a safe, structured, caring,
Catholic education in the Jesuit tradition. Loyolas target
population is unique among private schools: teenage males in Detroit
and its nearby communities with great academic and social potential
but who may not be working to that potential.

Loyola is a strong, tightly-knit community of students, parents,
and staff. Our young men learn to recognize and develop their talents
for their own betterment and for the service of others. We are proud
of our many successesembodied especially in our 300 alumni.

Of course, finances have a way of tethering ideal visions to reality.
Loyola remains committed to accepting any student, regardless of
his familys financial resources. The generosity of many friends
over the years has enabled us to meet the demonstrated need of each
student and to provide him with an opportunity to succeed at Loyola.
On average, each family pays about $2,200 of our "full"
tuition of $3,700. This leaves a gap of about $10,300 between what
the typical family can pay and the actual cost of $12,500 to educate
each student for a year.

Our Annual Appeal is the single most important way we fund this
gap. The need for Loyola High School in our community is as great
as ever. Please be generous in supporting our young men.

Thank you for considering this request. May God continue to bless
you and the Loyola High School community.

Sincerely,

Rev. David Mastrangelo, S.J., President
Kitty Cooney Storen, Director of Development

Educating
young men who will give Detroit
a brighter future

How to support
Loyola's 2007-2008 Annual Appeal |

Over
the past couple weeks, the one table in our Development Office has
been covered with lists and photos as we worked to organize the
materials for Loyolas 2007-2008 Annual Appeal, our single
most important fundraising effort. While our two events, the spring
Tigers evening and the fall Carron scholarship party, help provide
funds for tuition assistance, the yearly Annual Appeal funds the
"gap" between tuition paid and the total cost of a Loyola
education.
To quote from our Annual Appeal letter: "Finances have
a way of tethering ideal visions to reality". And, while our
eyes are on our vision, the reality of the budget keeps us focused
on the basics.

Loyolas vision is clear: to provide a safe, structured,
caring, faith-based education in the Jesuit tradition for teenage
males in Detroit and its nearby communities who are not working
to their academic and social potential.

Loyolas reality is challenging: most of our young men
come from families of limited financial means such that they are
unable to pay the amount of tuition that funds the typical private
school. While the overwhelming majority of private schools set their
tuition at an amount to cover 70 80% of annual costs (with
yearly increases to cover increased costs), we have set our tuition
at a level that reflects the economic reality of our families, which
means it covers less than 20% of our operating revenue. Moreover,
because we remain committed, as we were when we first opened our
doors in 1993, to accept any student regardless of his financial
situation, many families are not able to pay the full tuition. However,
family that can do pay the entire amount.
The Cost of a Loyola Education

$12,500 Full cost to educate a
student
$ 3,700 Tuition
$ 1,500 Average tuition award (based on need)
$ 2,200 Average family tuition payment
$10,300 Average gap between total cost and tuition paid

Funding the Gap: Over the years, Loyola has looked for creative
ways to fund this gap. Five years ago, we initiated the Loyola Work
Experience Program (LWEP), a required work experience for 11th and
12th graders which provides funds that help reduce the gap in a
students final two years. But, the fact remains that we depend
on the generosity of many, many friends to provide our students
with the opportunity to succeed at Loyola.

For many of our young men, a Loyola education is their last real
chance to experience the kind of academic and personal success that
will change their lives. Your financial help will help allow the
Loyola vision to become a reality. Please support our 2007-2008
Annual Appeal.
Please consider a gift or pledge to the Loyolas 2007-2008
Annual Appeal. In doing so, you will be helping give deserving
young men a chance. May God bless you, your family, and the Loyola
High School community.
