2007 Fr. Carron
Scholarship Fundraiser Recap
"Would You
Like to See the School?"
That was the question posed by Loyola 9th
and 10th graders as they greeted guests who were enjoying a
glass of cider after leaving the Chapel from the 2:30 Mass that
began our Sunday, October 14th Malcolm Carron Scholarship Fundraiser,
An Afternoon at Loyola.

Even though many guests had visited Loyola before, most opted for
the tour
and all remarked on how special it was to see the
classrooms, labs, and library through the eyes of a young man relatively
new to the tour guide business who was so pleased to show off "his"
school, his home away from home.

Chaired by Marianne & Bill Bolton and Mary Lynn &
Pete Prokop, who were assisted by a Steering Committee of special
friends of the school, An Afternoon at Loyola was a warm,
friendly gathering of over 200 guests who helped raise $80,000 plus
for Carron Scholarships. After seeing the school, guests enjoyed
cocktails and a light supper in the gym, which was dressed for the
occasion with round tables covered in terra cotta and goldenrod
colored clothes with centerpieces of fall flowers. The wonderful
sounds from Brassjar Music, a group lead by John Rutherford
(son of long-time Loyola friends, Pat and Charlie Rutherford),
provided just the right background music.

The
special focus of the afternoon was the presentation of the Malcolm
Carron Award to Jane and Ray Cracchiolo, two of Fr. Carrons
special friends. In introducing them, Rev. David Mastrangelo, S.J.,
told how Jane and Ray had attended the 1993 Opening Mass for Loyola
at the St. Francis Home for Boys (where Loyola spent its first year),
of their continued interest in the students from those early days
and their unwavering support of the school. In accepting the award,
Ray spoke of his and Janes commitment to Loyolas unique
mission and their joy in seeing the progress of the young men. [Click

The afternoon concluded with a truly remarkable announcement
by Rev. Robert Scullin, S.J., Provincial of the Detroit Province
Jesuits, of a $2 million gift from the Province to Loyolas
Faith in the Future campaign. In sharing this good news, Fr. Scullin
spoke of the Jesuits commitment to the mission on Loyola:
educating teenage males from Detroit and surrounding suburbs who
need a little extra help to reach their full academic potential.

Not only did Fr. Scullins announcement mark the public phase
of the Faith in the Future campaign, but it also served to emphasize
that it is the friendship and support of friends such as Jane and
Ray, as well as many others, that has allowed Fr. Carrons
vision for Loyola to take hold and flourish
which is the reason
for the campaign.
